Is soot dangerous?
Soot and dirty water from a fire can contain substances that make you sick, so handle fire-damaged items with care (USFA). Wear gloves, eye protection and a mask while cleaning.
Why does soot smear when I wipe it?
Soot is oily and stains easily. Wiping or using water too early can push it into paint and fabric (UF/IFAS Disaster Handbook).
What can I safely do myself?
| Task | Safe to do yourself? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Ventilate | Yes, if safe | Open windows and run fans when weather allows. |
| Change the HVAC filter | Yes | Replace it and keep checking until it comes out clean. |
| Vacuum loose soot | Yes, carefully | Hold the nozzle just above the surface. No brush attachments or upright vacuums. |
| Dry-sponge small areas | Yes, carefully | Use a dry chemical sponge on walls before any wet cleaning. |
| Wash plaster walls | No | Water-based cleaners can damage plaster. |
| Clean greasy kitchen or fuel residue | Usually no | Needs cleaners matched to the residue. |
| Clean ductwork | No | Have professionals inspect and clean the system. |
| Run an ozone machine | No | Only in an empty building, with people and pets out. |
Why is ozone a professional-only treatment?
The EPA says ozone can damage the lungs, even at relatively low levels. High concentrations are sometimes used in unoccupied spaces after a fire, but conditions must be controlled so no person or pet is exposed (EPA).
Ozone can also damage plants, rubber, wire coatings and fabrics. The EPA adds that it is not effective at removing many odor-causing chemicals. Removing the residue matters more than masking the smell.
What about food and medicine?
Throw out food exposed to flames or fumes, including food in cans and in the fridge or freezer (USDA). Ask a pharmacist about medicines that were exposed to heat or smoke.
What about clothes and fabrics?
Smoky textiles can often be cleaned and deodorized by professionals. Photograph them first and ask your adjuster before washing large amounts yourself. Some home washes can set odor.
When should I call a professional?
- Soot is in more than one room.
- Residue is greasy, sticky or smells strongly, even after light cleaning.
- The HVAC system ran during or after the fire.
- There is water damage as well as smoke.
- You plan to make an insurance claim and need documentation.
